The looks we get

If you're a woman in public service, IE: Law Enforcement, Fire Fighter, Military etc. you will have at least one story of someone being utterly shocked at "How different you look" outside of your uniform. This has happened to me dozens of times, the most recently being while down at Fort Rucker in Alabama for my boyfriend's Warrant Officer Candidate school graduation or (WOC). As always with these military events, we had a social and whilst eating hor d'oeurve's my boyfriend Andy, introduced me to his classmate, and his mother and father. The father spoke to Andy and said that it was cool what he did on the civilian side, referring to him being a state trooper. (Andy is Army Reserves) So, this conversation went on and on and I just smiled and participated when appropriate, until Andy mentioned to the man that I was a state trooper too. You should have seen this man's face!! His jaw dropped and he sort of stuttered. "you're, you're, a, a, state trooper too?" Followed by many other comments. I simply smiled and nodded as my proud man explained how I was actually at more of a dangerous post than he was. Eventually, after the man regained his composure, he apologized, said he was sorry and that society doesn't see many women that look like me in law enforcement.
Some women would get angry at this, maybe think that the man was sexist in a way. I was actually laughing and later told Andy it was not necessary to tell him what I did. Andy told me that I deserve recognition for the things that I do, just as much as a man would.
Moral of the story, find a man who is proud of you and boasts about you. Laugh at those who can't comprehend that you're a warrior and feminine all in one. Ladies, you are all beautiful and unique with special skills to offer the world. Let your light shine, and laugh at the silly things.
